Sculptural Installation

This research is based on an idea created in the late 1920s. The Great Depression in America, formed for a group of people the desire to flee from their own reality. Tiki Culture arose from an idealized version of the South Specific, where love, danger and most of all relaxation was the main appeal. Nowadays, trips and holidays under the name of ‘Detox Retreats’ are more popular than ever. These retreats claim to detox you from the addictive digital society we live in. Even though it’s popularity, these trips always seem to fail. Coming back from a holiday like this, you will return to the exact same world that you came from. Similar to the 1920s, I imagined a space to form this getaway. A space for me to flee from my own struggles that growing up in the digital era has brought me. I built this personalized island from hand-made, found and bought objects. Together they tell the multi-layered story of fearing and searching for decisiveness and boarders of limit. They represent what a daydream of fleeing looks like for me.
